FAQ |
Will they mow my lawn? |
No, not really. Goats prefer woody browse (weeds, branches). First the goat will eat all the flowers, bushes, and "highly prized" plants of your yard. Then the goat will nibble the leaves, twigs and bark of any yummy trees it can reach and only then will it start on the grass.
Do goats really eat anything? Like tin cans and stuff? |
NO! They'll nibble at things just to see what they are. But they don't eat them. Goats need proper minerals and good quality feed to be healthy. |
Do they really faint? |
No, they do not lose consciousness. Please click this link to learn more about |
How long to they faint and how often? |
They faint or stiffen for about 10 to 15 seconds. As to how often...it depends on the individual goat. We have some that can hardly walk and are stiff all the time. While on the other hand, we have several who have only shown signs of stiffness once or twice per year. And then again we have one who has never stiffened or fainted. We don't intentionally make our goats faint. They make each other do it often enough!

What do you do with them? |
We raise ours for breeding stock and pets. We sell the kids in summer to folks who want to add to their herds or to folks that want to start a herd of their own. We love having them here, they're a hoot to watch and play with. If we get quite a bit of cashmere from their winter coats we sell it to a local spinner.

How much does it cost to raise a goat? |
We have found that up here in the north country, it costs approximately $400.00 per year per goat. That includes: pellets & hay, housing, fencing, vet costs, supplies (shots, hoof care, minerals, etc.) This cost is subject to change due to hay prices and vets visits. This is only an estimate for our area. With grain and hay prices going up, so will the cost to raise animals.

Do all goats have horns? |
No. Some have horns. Some are naturally polled (hornless). And some are de-horned by their owners. We do not disbud or dehorn our goats. Goats horns are their own built in air conditioners.
Do both males and females have horns? |
Yes |
Do they shed their horns like deer? |
No. However, they will lose them to battles with each other on occasion. |
Do all bucks stink? |
Bucks will stink during rut. However, a pet wether (castrated male) will not stink and make the best pets. |
